The monthly competition rules

Monthly Competition

Each month members may submit up to 3 photos as their entry.
There will be a theme for each month, which will be listed on a schedule for each year. Some months will be specific (a particular flower, plant, vegetable etc) but some months will be free choice.

For entries to be included they must:

  • Meet that month’s theme

  • Have been grown / are growing in your own garden/allotment/home/greenhouse within the last 12 months

  • Maximum of 3 photos per member per month

  • Each entry / photo can only be submitted once in that year

Entries may be of a flower/fruit etc still in situ or picked/harvested and may be photographed in any way you wish (e.g. a single item/stem, a group of items/stems, in a vase or pot, on a plate etc).

Entries should include the name of the plant(s) if known. Either Latin or common name is fine. If you don’t know the name of the plant(s) that’s fine.

There will be no competition in December.

A whatsapp group called “EGGC monthly competition” has been created where all members are included. Shortly after each meeting (or on a similar date if there is no meeting that month), a message will be sent saying that entries can now be submitted. To enter, members need to upload one or more photos (if more than one photo, each one needs to be submitted as a separate post). At the end of that calendar month a further message will be sent saying that month’s competition is closed. No more entries can be submitted.

If a member submits more than 3 entries any extras will be removed from the whatsapp stream before members are directed to vote for their favourite entry.

Another message will then be sent asking members to vote for their favourite entry, by scrolling through the photos and putting a “thumbs up” emoji against their favourite. Each member can only vote for 1 photo.

The votes will be added up and the member (or members) who submitted the photo which received the highest number of votes will be the winner (or winners). The result will be announced at the next meeting (if there is one) and as a message on the whatsapp group.

The overall winner at the end of the year is the person who has received the highest number of thumbs up emojis for all their entries across the whole year (NOT won the most individual monthly competitions)  and, at the December meeting will receive a small prize…..and the admiration and congratulations of all members!

Even if there is no meeting one month (e.g. each January or when there is a visit instead) there will be a competition. The only month with no competition will be December, to allow that years winner to be announced.

Help is on hand to those who need it in relation to any questions you may have at any time – just send a message on the EGGC whatsapp and a committee member will direct message you.

The competition schedule for 2026 is as follows:

January - No competition this year

February - A potted plant, pot of bulbs or a winter flowering shrub

March - Daffodil(s)

April - Tulip(s)

May - Free choice

June - Rose(s)

July - Sweet Pea(s)

August - Free choice

September - Any vegetable (not a tomato or similar fruit!)

October - Any fruit

November - A cactus or succulent

December - no competition

The schedule will change for each year (to some extent).

What members need to do:

  • Generally – remember to take photos of things in your garden whenever you see something you like - you might want to submit it at sometime during the year.

  • When the message “Competition open” arrives on the EGGC whatsapp group, entries should then be submitted by uploading up to 3 photos by the end of that month (each one separately if more than 1 photo).

  • When the message arrives saying the competition is now closed and asking members to vote, you can do so within the next 7 days by going to the photo of your favourite entry, touching the photo with a finger and, when a set of emojis appear, tapping the “thumbs up” one.

Please only vote for one entry each month.
